Twilight

Wait, hear me out! I know the Twilight franchise has become nigh on an engorged entity, but amidst the commercialised teen fluff, the movie soundtrack is actually worth a listen.

The radio-thrashed ‘Evanescence-lite’ sounds of Paramore get two - unnecessary - look-in’s, while Jane’s Addiction front man Perry Farrell performs an unexpected choice of techno infused indie which is somewhat jarring for fans of the Jane’s back catalogue, and Collective Soul’s contribution sounds a little too middle-of-the-road / adult-contemporary for ‘the kids’.

But Muse’s ‘Supermassive Black Hole’ is a powerful opener and soundtrack veterans Linkin Park keep the stadium rock side well-represented, while The Black Ghosts are suitably emotive [insert satisfied teen angsty sigh here]. Mutemath’s twilight mix of ‘Spotlight’ is shamelessly catchy and Twilight hero come worldwide heart throb Rob Pattinson even gets a guernsey, perfect for the target demographic, and his acoustic track ‘Never Think’ shows potential.

The big disappointment is the omission of Radiohead’s ‘15 steps’. The film’s closing song would’ve been a huge boost for the album’s critical credibility, but there’s enough on here to deter from instant dismissal and encourage further investigation.
