Eric “God” Clapton Live

There is a very good reason why music buffs refer to Eric Clapton as “God”.  To see the “slowhand” in action live is utterly mesmerizing. I had the great fortune of witnessing this first hand with my brother by my side and of all days on my birthday !  It does not get much better than this.

I can get fairly emotional with the best of them – especially since becoming a parent (something certainly happens there – you start getting teary at the most pathetic things …)  But this was something else.  Music can move you and it certainly did this night.  While trying to comprehend that Eric Clapton was playing live in front of me I had even more trouble trying to process the fact that he was playing Little Wing.  I found the tears just rolling down my face with utter joy – knowing that there would not be another moment quite like this one.  I remember watching the close-up of Clapton’s hand on the large screen and the effortlessness with which it played the fret and only then really understood why he was “slowhand”. I reckon’ there are only three blokes who you really want to hear play ‘Little Wing’ live – and two of those greats are no longer with us (Jimi Hendrix & Stevie Ray Vaughan), the third of course is God himself !

Being a Robert Johnson fan from right back in my high school days, my brother and I were wishing, just hoping that we would hear Crossroads Blues and almost dared that God would leave it to the last … and he did.  To hear the full blown electric version of this Delta Blues classic by a master musician who has made it his own was the icing on the cake to say the least.

We floated out of the venue with a buzz that lasted well into the night.  We were still raving about this event for days following and realising how priviliged we were to be in such company.  This is going to be very hard to top.

Hi Leroy, I’m also a big fan of Eric since many years (I play guitar myself for over 30 years now). I can strongly recommend Eric’s autobiography and in it he tells the story of how he got the nickname “Slowhand” and it is not as you and most other people assume, because of his playing style (try playing some of his licks and they are not at all “slow”), it’s for a completely other reason……read the book and find out!!

Hey Nigel, Thanks for the comment.
I’ve done some more research and found out what you mean: http://www.whereseric.com/eric-clapton-faq/biographical-information-eric-clapton/how-did-eric-clapton-get-his-nickname-slowhan
I also thought it was worth providing the link for Clapton’s “God” reference:

However hard it might be, I still reckon’ Clapton makes it look easier than it is !
