One of the best things about the highly entertaining and extremely addictive comedy show ‘Scrubs’ is the music. It is clear that a great deal of thought has been put into the show’s eclectic soundtrack, and it definitely demonstrates the importance of perfect song choice.
Here are just a few of my favourite Scrubs music moments:
• “My Journey” – Episode 2, Season 3
So this episode introduced me to this awesome track from the 80s; ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’ by Journey. Yes that’s right, long before Glee put their tweeny-bopper spin on it, Scrubs was giving this song air time. The song is quintessential 80s power ballad and comes with a good “never give up” theme.
• “My Way Home” – Episode 7, Season 5
A funny and clever episode made all the better by a brilliantly chosen soundtrack. The opening scene of JD relaxing in a bubble bath takes a typical dig at his girly/gay tendencies, but is driven (and made all the more amusing) by the use of the song ‘Africa’ by Toto.
It’s not surprising that this Wizard of Oz-esque episode features ‘We’re off to see the Wizard’ and Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s beautiful (and frequently sampled) version of ‘Over the Rainbow’.
• “ My Lunch” – Episode 20, Season 5
My favourite scrubs episode ever. The death of 3 patients and the inner despair of one doctor is demonstrated perfectly by The Fray’s ‘How to Save a life’. The beautiful melody and poignant lyrics make for a tear-jerker of songs at the best of times, but teamed with this episode you’ll definitely be reaching for the tissues.
I could choose so many more, but I think that would probably be best addressed in instalments. Trust me, if you like a good laugh and good music, check Scrubs and its soundtrack out. If only everyone’s internal monologue had such a good soundtrack…
