Pink Ribbon Ball 2009

The Flinders Medical Centre Foundation celebrated the 20th Anniversary of The Pink Ribbon Ball - its annual fundraiser for breast cancer research and care in South Australia. ‘Pink is the New Green’ was the theme with revamping, recycling and reinventing.  Alice Springs comedian; Fiona O’loughlin kicked the night off and was her usual hysterical self. But the night belonged to Adelaide’s own inaugral Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian.

Guy opened with a few original ballads but then soon launched into a Memphis Soul set. Sam & Dave’s ‘Hold On I’m Coming’ was rockin’ and Otis Redding’s ‘Sittin’ On The Dock Of the Bay’ was a delight.  A mash of Gnarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy’ and Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive’ was received very well.  Sam Sparrow’s ‘Black and Gold’ was a real treat while Guy’s rendition of John Lennon’s ‘Jealous Guy’ was just sublime.  I remember looking at all of the empty tables and wondering how so many people could all fit on the dance floor at the same time.  And of course he finished with his latest hit “Like it Like That”.

I knew he was talented but had wondered at the start of his set how Guy would go entertaining such a large crowd looking to party.  Well, by the end of the night not only had Guy shown just how to keep people entertained but he sings live as well as any other artist I have heard.

It was a fantastic night for a fantastic cause.

Magic voice hasn’t he? Some artists disappoint because they don’t sound as good live as recorded. Guy sounds even better live than on cd. An amazing voice. And yes he sure knows how to entertain. A very special talent Australia should be very proud of.
