Musical Youth

I attended our local primary school concert with my wife where our children were among many who played their musical instruments. Our children have both been learning keyboard.

The eldest, our son, is getting old hat at these concerts by now and has been learning for a few years and starting to play some fairly complicated pieces - certainly harder than I would like to attempt.

While the youngest, our daughter, had her first outing. She was nervous, probably more about the protocol than the actual performance. She didn’t miss a beat.

It made me stop and think - have we just witnessed the future instrumentalists of Australia’s next big rock band or even a symphony orchestra !

Regardless, Mum and Dad were extremely proud of both children, of course. However, little did I know it at the time, but there was another reason to be proud …

According to recent research these children are more likely to have increased memory and attention, “enhanced motor and auditory skills as well as improvements in verbal ability and nonverbal reasoning” !

And here I just thought I might have had a sneak preview of the next Powderfinger, Jet or ASO, but I could have been in the presence of Rhode Scholars as well !
