Listening to this album it’s hard to believe that it was released in 1987 among all of the one hit wonders of the Pop 80s. Probably why this album is such a stand out classic, not only of its time but it endures today and will into the future. Rolling Stone magazine lists this album at No. 26 out of the top 500 albums of all time.
The opening track ‘Where The Streets Have No Name’ sets the landscape and along with the infamous photo of the Joshua Tree conveys the sheer vastness of this unconventional album. The whole look, feel and sound of this album was completely out of step with everything else that was going on. Like the Joshua Tree, this album stands alone forcing everything else into the background.
The haunting sound of ‘With Or Without You’ creeps up on you and gets under your skin, but for such an unusual song it turned out to be very radio friendly. And the gospel sing along ‘Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking for’ is a landmark song of this album. You can see why there was no room for ‘The Sweetest Thing’ (recorded at the same time) on The Joshua Tree - it just doesn’t fit. And to think Edge’s guitar at the start of ‘Street’s’ was nearly lost or destroyed - depending upon who’s story you believe.
A breakthrough album which took U2 to new dizzy heights and they haven’t looked back since. But don’t just take our word for it, check out this clip from the Classic Album series which includes intimate interviews with the band members and collaborators of this classic album.

Great write up! This is definitely one of my all time favorites. I still listen from start to finish. I have always been so impressed with the complexity of music from U2. It reminds me of the work that went into Zeppelin’s many projects. Their music is truly everlasting. I think my favorite cut from Joshua Tree is One Tree Hill. Such a beautiful and meaningful song. That’s what makes them so remarkable.
I am from the Boston area in the US, and just over a month ago U2 perfomed at the Somerville theatre. It was a practice for their upcoming world tour. Simply amazing to see these artists in such a small and intimate venue.
Thanks for adding my photo too
Always glad to hear from another U2 fan. I must admit that I also have a soft spot for One Tree Hill, especially the complete album version.
Even though I’ve seen U2 perform live a few times now, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t envious of your recent intimate outing !
Thanks for the use of your photo - we obviously rate it.
Not a bad post at all, would just have liked a few more details and some of the things explained a little more.
