I, like so many other Australians, saw Geoffrey Gurrumul Yununpingu perform live at the ARIAs and was mesmerized by his performance. I got hold of his “Gurrumul” album as soon as I could. But if you told me I’d get to witness him live within the next month I wouldn’t have believed you for a minute. They say he has the voice of an angel and after hearing him live I can vouch that they are right !
Not only did I manage to catch Gurrumul live at WOMADelaide I was also fortunate enough to be sitting in the VIP section (with the State Premier) side of stage !
To witness Gurrumul live is utterly amazing and a privilege. As the MC said “we have just witnessed something truely magical”.
Gurrumul is very shy and speaks limited English so Michael Hohnen (band member and Gurrumul album producer) speaks to the audience on his behalf.
Even though he sings in his native language it his music that speaks to you. You feel that you can understand what he is conveying without knowing the words. Gurrumul’s music transcends language and culture and takes you to another place which seems timeless.
Watch Gurrumul’s ARIA Award winning performance below of ‘Bapa’ and his live rendition of the opening track ‘Wiyathul’ at WOMADelaide.
